Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There is no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
