The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
