This Supernatural Story
The acclaimed director challenges his directorial skills in this clever ghostly tale filmed completely from the perspective of a ghost. As a family featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe settles into their fresh home, the lens – AKA the Presence – shadows their actions. The teen shows signs of conscious of the supernatural presence, and the entity appears guarding her. Yet what is the reason? The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
Nicolas Cage fully commits to his eccentric image in this meta comedy caper. He portrays an egotistical film star playing himself who agrees to a $1m payday to attend a festive event on the Spanish island for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by government spies to gather intel on the suspected cartel boss, the actor's unique performing skills comes in handy. This Saturday, prime time, Channel 4
The Black Phone Horror
Derrickson's locked-room horror holds up well even without a sequel. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, multiple child abductions has made the youth on edge. After Finney is kidnapped by “the Grabber” and held captive in a basement, he fears a terrible outcome. However, the disconnected phone on the wall continues to ring, with spooky callers providing assistance, while the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen might rescue him. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the conflict between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for Mammon in Showalter's delightfully tacky film adaptation about the fallen televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor acts as the corrupt Bakker, who declares initially, asserting religious justification for riches. The couple set about capitalizing on the American public's religious faith. It's a riot of poor styling, bad makeup and insincerity, yet Chastain manages to depict Tammy Faye as a sympathetic figure. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, the Film4 channel
