Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.
Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes are granted the right to contest specific decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move comes just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.
Case in Point
A recent case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Other Changes
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
